First Exchange Visit, Columbia

Coffee experts from Ethiopia and Honduras traveled to Colombia (5th – 16th Oct 2022) as part of the European Union and Spanish Cooperation project "Women, Coffee and Climate: Women's empowerment for the socio-ecological resilience of the coffee value chain against climate change in Ethiopia".

The delegation, consisting of representatives from various Ethiopian institutions including the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), Ethiopian Forestry Development (EFD), Ethiopian Women in Coffee (EWiC), and Organisation for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) as well as partners from Honduras and Colombia, participated in the event organized by the Spanish Cooperation AECID.

The exchange visit facilitated coordination meetings held in Bogotá and visits to Popayan, a major coffee producing area in Colombia. The exchange visit resulted in important lessons and recommendations at technical, institutional, and legal framework levels, which will be shared with actors in the coffee value chain in the three countries. Opportunities for joint collaborations were also identified, showcasing the potential for international cooperation in addressing the challenges faced by the coffee industry due to climate change and gender empowerment in Ethiopia and other coffee-producing countries.
